Mike Brookfield - Love Breaks The Fall
Text: Roelof Passions
Mike Brookfield, I had never heard of. But after a few listens of his last album, I will not easily forget him. This young man from Dublin has released his third album blues. For this, he experienced a very musical career in the musical scene and as a jazz musician. He is also a highly respected music teacher. Mike is an accomplished guitarist with an interesting past and a bright future. His album Love Breaks The Fall has become a very stylish blues rock album, varied and beautifully played. All songs are once more written by Mike himself.
One of his biggest inspirations is Eric Clapton and it is also very clear on this album. The opening track and title track of the album Love Breaks The Fall is still a bit subdued, but let all clear to hear what Mike is capable. Then comes the song Catfish Missile: This number is quite different from the rest of the album. It's a real Americana song with beautiful harmonies.
During the song The Killing Line go really slow down. A great build up to a phenomenal guitar solo at the end. And just when you start to get used to the blues, Mike comes with an easy blues ballad Blue Skies, a truly great song with his guitar completely let go as if you are listening to Joe Bonamassa. And then comes the spirit of Eric Clapton all over in the song No Candle Burns In The Rain.
The instrumental BareWitness does not add much to this album. Fortunately, the inspiration of Eric Clapton picked up again with the songs What You Do not Know Is not Gonna Kill Ya! and Golden Rule Girl. The rock 'n roll song All My Heroes Are Junkies bring you gradually all to the end of the album concludes with a phenomenal instrumental Peace For Joe. It is a tribute to a deceased friend and you can hear the emotion and feeling in his fingers so that the chills go over your body.
Mike Brookfield sounds on this album that he has a natural talent is playing the blues. Maybe he sticks once the North Sea and we have fantastic guitar work and hear live witness.
